I think that if the year following Mo's retirement there is not a "relief pitcher of the year award" being given away then something is wrong with the baseball world. I'm not sure there is another player in sports that is so clearly the #1 at what they do the way Mariano is.

Give the Cy Young to the best starter, and the Mariano Rivera award to the best reliever in the game. What do you all think about that one?

I agree, I don't think there will be anyone who could do what he has done for so long and basically with only one pitch. He will be the standard for every closer

This makes perfect sense. Cy Young is not even close to starting pitchers what Mo is to closers in history.

I have to disagree with you Cy Young had 511wins, go look at some of the records that he has. I think he has something like 749 complete games

Theres no way to tell, but his records would not be the same in todays game. I think the guy was retired before modern baseball teams had even been formed. He pitched on farms to get half those wins

Cy Youngs accomplishments are suspect at best. baseball players weren't even athletes back in his day. And how legit was record keeping in the 1800's?

So anyway, I think it would be a disgrace to not have a Sandman award. The man has been a freak of nature, and one of the very few above steroid accusations

Last night was a very sad way to end an incredible career. Hopefully Mo comes back, but It is hard to picture that happening in any real capacity. Hopefully someone brings up the idea of this award to somebody in MLB and they run with it
