In what is unexpected news today, the New York Knicks might be suring up their interior defense by signing free agent, Tyson Chandler.

The deal, which was reported by CBSSports.com, is reported worth $60 million over four years but all the specifics of the contracts are not yet known.

This of course brings up the question: Is this the end of the Knicks pursuing Chris Paul?

If the initial contract figures are correct, the Knicks won't have the cap space to make such a signing. In that case, they'd have to use their amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups to clear enough space to sign Chandler.

Going forward from here is tricky. The Knicks would then not have the money to offer Paul if he were to hit the free agent market unless he'd be willing to take a mid-level exception which is worth almost $6 million, money that pails in comparison to what other teams would offer him.

The only other way out would be for the Knicks to trade either Amar'e Stoudemire or Carmelo Anthony, two players who just came aboard last season. Stoudemire seems the more likely to be traded considering his injury problems.

But that being said, both are highly liked in New York and it would be a tough sell for the Knicks to pull that off.

Until the specifics of the Chandler deal are known, we won't know what kind of wiggle room the Knicks could have moving forward.

Stay tuned with an ear to the ground on this one.
