It took three overtime periods to do it, but the Rangers finally snapped a seven-game overtime playoff losing streak that had dogged them for the past five years. Marian Gaborik tallied 14:41 into the third overtime period to give the Rangers a 2-1 win against the Capitals in Game 3 and a 2-1 series lead heading into Saturday's Game 4 at Verizon Center. It's a huge swing of mojo towards the Blueshirts heading into Game 4 Saturday. A key part was the slowing down of Ovechkin, Alex Ovechkin came out buzzing for Game 3 and was rewarded accordingly. With 14:49 over the first two periods of the game he was a key part of the Capitals attack but scored nothing, but came close twice. The Rangers got a huge helping hand from their top defensive line of Ryan Mcdonagh and Dan Girardi. McDonagh after logging a staggering 53:17 in ice time during the Rangers' stunning 2-1 victory at Washington. "Everybody put forth such a great effort. It was an unbelievable feeling to win." Coach Torts also commented on Dan Girardi's play, He has a mental toughness about him that has impressed us right away, when he first came to us," coach John Tortorella said. Girardi left the game briefly after taking a stick to the face from his goalie Henrik Lundqvist. He came back with stitches in his head and was still giving up his body to block shots. That should tell you something about this group of guys. "It's not exhaustion when you win the game. It feels like all the effort paid off. That's the only way to put it." Mcdonagh's quote describes it all for the Rangers 2-1 win.
Game 4 is Saturday 12:30 at the Verizon Center in Washington. Rangers get the day off today and a well deserved one too.
